Kids enjoy performing the MQ Scan

The decrease in motor skills and physical activity in children has become a worldwide concern during the past decade. Schools, and especially physical education, have started to play a significant role in this matter. The concept of ‘physical literacy’ has become more and more important. This concept is about motivation, trust, physical competence, knowledge and understanding about taking responsibility for implementing physical activity in life and recognizing the importance of it. Motor competence plays a crucial part in children’s physical activity.

Children’s motor competence (4-12-year-olds) can be tested using the Athletic Skills Track (AST), also known as the MQ Scan. This scientifically validated test monitors children’s motor competence by using three age dependent obstacle tracks. One of the things people wondered about was, whether the kids were having fun during the test as part of PE classes. Hoeboer, De Vries, Mast and Savelsbergh (2017) carried out interesting research into this.

The main conclusion of this research project is that a majority (98%) of the kids enjoyed taking the AST during PE classes. The fun they had didn’t depend on age, gender and level of motor competence.

Based on their research, Cale, Harris and Chen (2014) advise on how to make to make sure that taking the test is good fun.
Three practical recommendations:

  1. Make sure the test takes place in a familiar environment (during a PE class).
  2. Make sure the test is fun for ALL children.
  3. Do not focus on the result of the test.
